Supercritical CO2 extraction process and its influencing factors

(1) The influence of extraction pressure

Extraction pressure is one of the important parameters of SFE. When the extraction temperature is certain, the pressure increases, the fluid density increases, the solvent strength increases, and the solubility of the solvent increases. For different substances, the extraction pressure is very different.

(2) the effect of extraction temperature

Temperature on the supercritical fluid solubility is more complex, under a certain pressure, the temperature-increased volatility of the extracted material increases, which increases the concentration of the extracted material in the supercritical gas phase, thus increasing the amount of extraction; but on the other hand, the temperature increases, the supercritical fluid density decreases, which reduces the solubility, resulting in a reduction in the amount of extraction. Therefore, selecting the extraction temperature should be a comprehensive consideration of these two factors.

(3) The impact of raw material particle size

Raw material particle size can affect the extraction recovery rate. Reducing the particle size of raw materials, can increase the contact area of solids and solvents, thereby increasing the extraction rate. However, particle size, such as too small, too fine, will not only seriously block the sieve, resulting in the clogging of the extractor outlet filter.

(4) The effect of CO2 flow rate

The change in CO2 flow rate has two effects on the supercritical extraction, too large a flow rate of CO2 will cause the CO2 flow rate in the extractor to increase, the CO2 residence time is shortened, and the contact time with the extracted material is reduced, which is not conducive to the improvement of the extraction rate. On the other hand, an increase in the flow rate of CO2 can increase the mass transfer driving force of the extraction process, which correspondingly increases the mass transfer coefficient and accelerates the mass transfer rate, thus improving the extraction capacity of SFE. Therefore, a reasonable choice of CO2 flow rate in the SFE is also quite important.
